24 Hrs in Vienna

Welcome to the my blog!

In the summer of 2018 I set out on my first solo European adventure for a month and a half. Needless to say, I brought back thousands of photos, which I’m eager to share with you. First up is Vienna! I got to visit Vienna for a couple of hours with my cousins Klaudia and Samuel last September. We drove from Bratislava, Slovakia and arrived in Vienna about 45 minutes later. Imagine that! Having lived in Canada for over a decade, it is such luxury to be able to get somewhere - anywhere - in under an hour, let alone another country. That’s one of the things I love about Europe, everything’s so close. An hour of driving and you find yourself in a whole new country, new culture, and new language.

First thing we did when we got to Vienna was make a pit stop at the Cafe Sacher Wien, and had a slice of the famous and so called “best chocolate cake in the world,” the Sacher torte with a side of cappuccino. It tasted heavenly, of course. If you know me, you know I’m a complete chocoholic and love chocolate more than any dessert. The richer, the better!

Once our sweet tooth was satisfied, we went on to roam the streets of Vienna. Walking past a number of cool, historical buildings including the intricate and epic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. I was excited to have snapped a shot of a monk just outside the subway, with the cathedral in the background. There’s a couple things that make you feel like you’re transported back in time when you’re in Vienna - the architecture (obviously), and the horse carriages with drives dressed in antique outfits, including a top hat, cape, and all.

When deciding what to get for lunch, we knew we had to go try the German Wiener Schnitzel at a traditional restaurant downtown. I, being a vegetarian opted for the fried Emmentaler cheese with a side of the traditional potato salad, while my cousins enjoyed a schnitzel bigger than their dinner plates. Unfortunately I was very hungry and didn’t get a chance to snap any pictures of it. Later, we walked some more, did a little shopping on the main strip, and soaked in the energy of the old city. Before we left we got one more snack at the Trzesniewski buffet, the little open-faced sandwiches with various spreads and toppings which were delicious. They’ve got these mini pints of beer you can order to wash it all down.

As the rain started coming down, we hopped back in Klaudia’s car and drove back to Bratislava. Next time I come to Vienna, I’d love to spend more time and go inside St. Stephen’s Cathedral and some of the museums. I love learning about the history of a place, and Vienna has a rich history to discover.

With love, Jazmina
